With every passing year comes a fresh start for many, the main motivating factor behind New Year Resolutions. Whether you decided that this year will be the year you plan ahead, drink more water, get your wellness in order, get organized, or learn a new hobby, there is one other resolution that you won’t want to forget about this year. More on that later. Now, we are going to dive into three important ways to stick to your guns and succeed in your New Year Resolutions. This year is different.
- Choose a resolution that does not require you to operate on your own power
After all, we are only human beings. We make mistakes. We are not perfect. We actually are not all that powerful. When we choose to “quit” doing something, this requires us to use our willpower to muscle through it and tough it out, which is why we end up giving up on month two, week two, or let’s be honest, day two. Instead, focus on something healthy or positive you can add to your life instead of focusing on taking away. Healthy breeds healthy. As we add healthiness and positivity to our lives, we will be surprised at how often we end up with more than the one intended healthier habit.
- Understand and recognize that success has many different faces
What looks like success for me will never be the same as what looks like success for you. Think about creating “S.M.A.R.T.” goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. When we set goals keeping this acronym in mind, we are setting ourselves up for success rather than failure. If I don’t know what my true goal is, how I will measure success in it, if it is possible, and when I will expect to have achieved it, then I will fail… every time. Because failure has many faces too. If I don’t know what success looks like to me in this goal, then everything looks like failure. So, I need to be “S.M.A.R.T.” in my goal setting.
- KEEP - IT - SIMPLE
If my New Year Resolution is to meet the perfect partner, fall in love, get married, move in together, and have a baby… There is absolutely no way that I will achieve that in one year. Also, perfect people do not exist. It is highly unlikely for this scenario to play out well, unless you are the exeption to the general ways in which relationships are built. Maybe you are! The point is that goals tend to be more achievable when they are simplistic and realistic.
Whatever your New Year Resolutions are this year, don’t forget about the most important one to make this year: Get my insurance needs in order. This is one of the best goals you can set for yourself. It is surprising how little most people know about their insurance coverages. In fact, you may find yourself in a situation in which the right coverage could save you money or ultimately protect you against a potential loss or lawsuit depending on your individual insurance needs.
